The Rick Steves’ Best of Prague and Budapest tour itinerary includes a Hungarian cooking class. At first, I wasn’t too thrilled about the prospect of spending time in a cooking class while traveling but I am glad I participated in this activity because it was definitely very memorable. It was an interesting experience learning how to make traditional dishes and gaining an understanding of Hungarian cuisine. It was also fun attempting to make an apple strudel from scratch and then trying all the food we prepared. And as a wonderful bonus, we were gifted a Hungarian cookbook!
I was placed on the green team which, in my opinion, was the best one – Go Team Apple Strudel! The other teams prepared the cherry soup, two types of paprikash (one with meat and the other made of mushrooms), and the dumplings that go with the paprikash. After we finished cooking, we were treated to a glass of wine and some delicious spreads to accompany our dishes. I’m now a fan of Hungarian cuisine!
Chef Parade is a cooking school with three locations, two of which are in Budapest. Our course was in the Bécsi Ut location which is on the Buda side of Budapest. The facility houses several cooking studios and a cafe and provides lockers so one can store their items. Chef Parade offers hundreds of cooking courses from Modern and Hungarian to Brazilian Classics to Street Food Italy and any other type of cuisine you can possibly imagine.
If you will be in Budapest several days and have an interest in cooking and international cuisines, then I recommend taking a course with Chef Parade.
