A destination guide for Chef Parade – turning cooking into a fun, memorable experience.
Chef Parade is a cooking school with three locations in Hungary, two of which are in Budapest. The school offers hundreds of cooking courses, from Modern and Hungarian to Brazilian Classics and Street Food Italy, and any other type of cuisine you can imagine. During my Rick Steves’ Best of Prague and Budapest tour, the group had the opportunity to participate in a cooking class that focused on traditional cuisine. I will admit that at first I wasn’t thrilled at having to cook while on vacation, but this activity turned out to be a very memorable experience!
My group’s cooking course was at Bécsi Ut location, which is on the Buda side of the city. This facility features several cooking studios and a café, and also provides lockers for storing items while cooking (that is why there are few pictures in this post, my phone was in storage). At the beginning, our instructor went over some basic safety rules, explained the dishes we would be cooking, and then divided the group into teams.
To start our cooking adventures, I was placed on the green team, which, in my opinion, was the best one – Go Team Apple Strudel! The other teams prepared cherry soup, two types of paprikash (one with meat and the other made with mushrooms), and the dumplings that accompany the paprikash. After we finished cooking, we had the opportunity to try the various dishes. To conclude our time at Chef Parade, we were gifted a Hungarian cookbook!
Cooking enthusiasts should consider enrolling in a class at Chef Parade. Whether you are an amateur cook or a seasoned chef, this school offers a variety of courses tailored to all tastes and experience. The staff at Chef Parade does a great job of explaining steps clearly, providing hands-on demonstrations, and is patient, even when you’re making a bit of a mess! With classes lasting 3 to 4 hours, this experience is ideal for those spending a few days in Budapest. If you don’t have time to participate in a class and are interested in Hungarian cuisine, Chef Parade has cookbooks available for purchase online and at their facilities.
