This guide provides key facts about Vienna, plus an interactive map to help you plan your trip.
As majestic as the Danube River that flows through its center, Vienna is the epitome of imperial elegance. Once the heart of the Habsburg Empire, the city was shaped by classical music and the fine arts, with those influences visible in its grand palaces, elegant museums, stately opera house, and historic cafés. Today, Vienna offers visitors a timeless experience rooted in history, culture, and everyday charm.

Inspiration
What made me choose Vienna? I’ve long been drawn to Vienna’s elegance and its world-class museums, grand palaces, and legendary opera house. After visiting its sister city, Budapest, in 2024, I became even more interested in Vienna and decided to move it to the top of my bucket list. Given my positive experience with Rick Steves’ Best of Prague and Budapest tour, I decided to join the Best of Munich, Salzburg, and Vienna tour to explore the city’s highlights.
Travel Style
My time in Vienna was a blend of guided touring and solo adventures. I joined the Best of Munich, Salzburg, and Vienna in 8 Days Tour, which included a day and a half of guided activities in the city. After the tour concluded, I stayed two additional days to explore museums, churches, and other sites not covered in the itinerary. The weather was rather poor during those days, so I missed out on visiting gardens and photographing the exteriors of the city’s many beautiful palaces and historic buildings. That alone gave me a good reason to add Vienna to my must-return list. Salzburg is on that list, too, since I spent only a day there, and there is still much to explore in the city.

Itinerary
S – Solo Adventures T- Tour Activities
Friday: The tour group arrived in the late afternoon. After checking into the hotel, we met with a local guide for a brief orientation walk through the surrounding area (T).
Saturday: This was one of my favorite days of the trip. In the morning, our local guide led the group to the Third Man Museum, which he founded and still operates, for an exclusive tour of its history and exhibits (T). Later, the group visited the Kunsthistorisches Museum, where the guide explained its significance and highlighted some of its most famous artworks (T). After the tour concluded, we had free time for the remainder of the afternoon, and I chose to stay at the museum for an additional two hours (S).
Sunday: Due to poor weather, I focused on sites located near the hotel. In the morning, I visited the Imperial Treasury and later explored St. Stephen’s Cathedral, including its interior, crypt, and both towers (S).
Monday: I began my final day of the trip by touring the Imperial Apartments, then meeting former tourmates to explore the Museum of Natural History together (S). On the way to the hotel, I made a quick stop at St. Peter’s Church (S). My final experience in Vienna was attending a performance of The Magic Flute at the Vienna State Opera (S).

Interactive Travel Map
Fellow adventurers, here is a great map to help you plan your trip to Vienna. I created this map while planning my own trip, and later added the restaurants I visited. I didn’t have time to see all the sites on my to-do list, but I left them on the map for reference.

Key Facts
Language: Vienna’s primary language is German. During my time there, I generally had no issues communicating, as most staff working in the hotel, restaurants, and sites spoke some English or Spanish (I’m bilingual, which helps when traveling!). Google Translate is a great tool for reading signage at metro stations and bus stops.
Currency: The Euro is the main currency in Vienna. I ordered cash via Bank of America before the trip, but ATMs are available at the airport and throughout the city. Credit cards are accepted at most locations, but the tours and the bookstore at St. Stephen’s Cathedral are cash-only. Cash also comes in handy for tipping servers and using public restrooms.
Transportation: Many of Vienna’s must-see sites are within walking distance of one another, reducing the need for public transportation. In the three and a half days I was in the city, I rode the metro and took a tram only once. The experience was similar to that in Munich and Budapest: reliable, clean, and efficient public transit. Day and multi-day passes are available and provide a cost-effective option for visitors who plan to use public transportation frequently or travel beyond the city center.
Weather: Vienna typically has mild, pleasant weather in spring and fall, while summers can bring occasional heat waves, with temperatures reaching the mid to high 80s (F). Winters are generally very cold, and snowfall is common in January and February. I visited Vienna in early May, and the weather varied considerably. During the first few days, it was sunny and a comfortable 72°F; later, it turned rainy and chilly, with daytime temperatures in the mid-50s (F) and evenings dropping into the low 40s (F).
Safety: Now, to an important topic everyone has in mind: safety. Is Vienna a safe city? Yes. As a solo female traveler, I felt very safe in Vienna, even when walking back to the hotel at 11:00 PM from the Vienna State Opera. That said, Stephansplatz can become very crowded during peak travel season, so it is wise to follow standard safety practices and remain aware of your surroundings.
